Housing Rights and the Fair Housing Act
Housing rights for people with disabilities are covered by the Fair Housing Act (FHA). The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination against individuals with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit major life activities.
Landlords must provide reasonable accommodations in policies (e.g., service animals) and allow reasonable modifications for accessibility. It also requires that new multi-family housing (4+ units, built after March 1991) be designed for accessibility.
