The ADA covers both public and private transportation and contains specific requirements for transit systems including fixed route buses, light and heavy rail systems, ADA complementary paratransit, over-the-road buses, shuttles, and other forms of transportation. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is responsible for ensuring public transportation providers properly implement Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the ADA), the Department of Transportation (DOT) ADA regulations.

Accessible airline travel is protected by the Air Carriers Access Act, which is overseen by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's Aviation Division.
